Transportation from base-to-base, town-to-town and coast-to-coast for World War II veterans usually meant hopping on the rails. But each ride was different - some better, some worse - for most veterans as they fanned out across the country.

A black doll strapped by wire to a homemade cross outside a Bluffs home wasn't meant to be racist or offensive, said a woman who lives there. Neighbors were offended, though, and called police several times to complain. The cross and doll were removed this week and won't be put back up, the home's owner said.
