Erin Stone is a certified surgical tech in the Surgery Department and has been with CHI Health Mercy for 12 years.
Stone comes from a family of healthcare workers, and they love their career choices. She preferred the surgical, hands-on patient care. Her mom was a surgical tech for many years, and she learned from her and followed in her footsteps.
Stone said the most rewarding thing about working at Mercy “is the staff and doctors. Everyone is like family at Mercy.”
“I enjoy teaching the students’ and sharing my experiences over the years,” she said. “Healthcare is constantly evolving. It amazes me at how far surgery has come. I am part of the DaVinci robot team. Such a wide variety of surgeries can be done robotically, leading to less risk of infection, less bleeding, smaller incisions and better patient outcomes.”
Stone’s favorite medical acronym is PPE (personal protective equipment). PPE refers to items worn to protect yourself and patients from germs and infections. Erin wears PPE every day in surgery which includes protective eyewear, surgical masks, gowns, gloves, shoe covers, hats and possibly more depending on the procedure.
Stone was born and raised in Omaha but is a beach bum at heart. She tries to make it to the ocean at least once a year. She has two dogs named Keely and Wylie, and they are the cutest dogs ever.
