Valerie Siegrist is an RN in Ortho Neuro (4H) at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital.
Following a successful career as a compliance VP in the for profit arena, Siegrist started her second career in nursing later in life.
One of four children raised by a single mother, Siegrist was encouraged to pursue a non-traditional female occupation — that included nursing, something she always dreamed of doing.
“Because I came to the profession later in life, it feels like my calling,” she said.
Siegrist added she is humbled by the amount of attention that sometimes comes with being a professional caregiver.
“My patients and their families don’t know that I get much more from them than I feel like I am giving,” she said.
One of Siegrist’s daily goals is to have a positive impact on every patient, and every patient’s family, with whom she interacts. She is married to Brent Siegrist, a long-time Iowa politician.
Now retired, you can sometimes find Brent delivering late night meals to the nursing staff on 4H. The couple raised two successful children, a son and a daughter, and are now empty-nesters.
Siegrist’s said her family is her life and she couldn’t feel more blessed.
