Counterclockwise from right, Council Bluffs Fire Chief Justin James serves chili to John and Andrea Marshall and their children, Elizabeth, 5, and William, 8, during a chili cook-off fundraiser for the Kanesville Riders on the 100 block of West Broadway on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019. Nine bars participated in the the cook-off, which was a battle between the Council Bluffs Police Department, fire department, public works, the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, Operation 22 Til Freedom and the Kanesville Riders. Representatives from each entity prepared at least one chili and left it up to a public vote. The Council Bluffs Fire Department reigned supreme this year, taking home the first-place trophy. All proceeds will go toward the Kanesville Riders. Formed in 2014, the honor guard has committed more than 530 military funerals, capable of presenting full military burial honors, firing detail, escorts, dedications and flag raising — all in the name of veterans.
