Cheryl Wallace of Des Moines plays her cello for Boomer the Beagle, bottom left, and Sadie the Pug mix, at right, at Midlands Humane Society on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2019. For the past year, Wallace has been traveling to shelters in Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri to perform for shelter and rescue dogs. Wallace, an animal shelter advocate, said the cello’s frequency range is one of the closest instruments to match the human voice, and she said playing lullabies and other arrangements on the lower strings at slow tempos provides soothing stimulation for the dogs. Yesterday was her 50th shelter visit and her second to Midlands Humane Society. More information about her cause and contact information can be found at cello4dogs.com.
