100th Birthday: Thomas Scarpello

Thomas Scarpello, of Council Bluffs, will celebrate his 100th birthday on Tuesday, December 18, 2018.

Thomas was born and raised in Council Bluffs. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II for three and a half years. He was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Thomas Jefferson where he and his shipmates were part of the landing craft crew who participated in the invasions of Omaha Beach, Southern France and Okinawa, Japan. Following his years in the Navy, Thomas worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 38 years.

He is a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and has been a member of the American Legion Post No. 2 for over 70 years. Thomas has two daughters, Josephine Scarpello and Diana (Donald) Powell; two grandchildren and three great-grandsons.
