Lewis Central Middle School eighth-grader Olivia Arkfeld presents her individual exhibit on James Balog's Extreme Ice Survey to judges during the National History Day regional competition at Kirn Middle School on Saturday, March 23, 2019. More than 50 students from the Council Bluffs, Lewis Central and Harlan Community School Districts competed across the website, documentary, paper, performance and individual and group exhibit categories. Deb Masker, a teacher at Kirn and National History Day program coordinator for the area, said that participating in the program helps students learn valuable life skills like interviewing, source analyzing, public speaking, editing across different mediums and more. "It's a long process, but these kids are learning skills that they'll using for the rest of their lives," she said. "They get a lot of life skills through this."
