Wilson Middle School lost a family member this week.

Kylie Benson, 14, daughter of Jason Benson and Stacy Holt of Council Bluffs, died June 1. She was just finishing eighth grade.

When a young person dies, it’s the loss of a person and the loss of her potential, said Kim Kazmierczak, principal at Wilson.

“Death is tragic at any age but devastating when it happens to a child,” she said. “Kylie was a part of our school community for three years and had so much potential to do wonderful things with her life. Her friends and teachers cared deeply about Kylie and are going to miss her very much.”

According to Kazmierczak, “Kylie loved anime — specifically, Lucky Star. She was a fantastic artist.

“Kylie was always in tune with whatever was going on at school,” she said. “She always started her morning with a one-liner joke with Mr. Adams,” she said. “After lunch every day, she was first in line waiting for Mr. Scherb, and she greeted him every single day by asking him how his day was and told him how hers was on the way back to the classroom.

“Every class of Genius Hour, she would greet Mrs. Knau by saying, ‘I’ll give you 10 bucks if you let me go home right now.’ Mrs. Knau responded with ‘Kylie, I can’t do that. Then I wouldn’t have the pleasure of your company!’”

Kylie had three brothers — Daniel, Scott and Brodey Benson.
