New legislation signed into law in May by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds will add a Pottawattamie County Supervisor and a Council Bluffs City Council member as ex officio members of the Iowa West Racing Association Board or Directors.
Pete Tulipana, president and CEO of the Iowa West Foundation, met with council members Monday evening and with supervisors Tuesday morning. He asked each governing body to submit the names of members who might be interested in serving as ex officio members of the Iowa West Racing Association Board.
After the names of interested officials are submitted, they will be reviewed by the Iowa West Racing Association Board, with the Iowa West board selecting one supervisor and one council member to serve as a non-voting member of the board.
In speaking to supervisors Tuesday morning, Tulipana said it is his understanding that the new legislation was proposed by Sen. Dan Dawson, R-Council Bluffs.
He said that Dawson did not visit with Iowa West officials prior to introduction of the legislation, and Iowa West officials are not certain why it was felt the legislation was needed.
Tulipana said that regulations regarding the ex officio positions are currently being drafted by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. The regulations are expected to be voted on by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission members at their July meeting.
“I don’t really know the purpose of Senate File 617,” Tulipana said, “but we will welcome these ex officio members with open arms.”
Dawson could not be reached for comment.
