CARROLL – St. Albert threw a lumber party Saturday at the CYO tournament, rolling up 32 runs and 28 hits in wins over Le Mars Gehlen and Remsen St. Mary.
The preseason Class 1-A No. 2 Falcons opened with a 13-0 win over No. 9 Remsen St. Mary’s, then beat Le Mars Gehlen 19-6.
Ethan Bernard threw a three-hit shutout against St. Mary’s, backed by two doubles each from Cy Patterson and Isaac Sherrill and a triple from Lance Wright.
In the win over Gehlen, the Falcons scored nine runs in the first, helped by a series of walks and hit batters. They added nine in the fourth.
“The first game against Remsen, we had 16 hits...The second game we had 12 hits. So we brought out the bats today,” Falcons coach Duncan Patterson said.

CLARINDA – Red Oak scored three runs in the seventh inning, but Class 2-A No. 5 Treynor held on.
Will Halverson and Kristian Martens each scored two runs for the Cardinals.
Also Saturday, the Cardinals beat Clarinda 11-7 in 9 innings to give coach Bob Mantell his 300th career victory.

Saintes fall to Heelan, St. Edmond
CARROLL – St. Albert had a long day on Saturday at the CYO tournament, losing 11-3 to Sioux City Heelan and 12-0 to Class 1-A No. 12 Fort Dodge St. Edmond.
St. Albert coach Lyndsay Daley said her team is still jelling and has had its practice time limited by the recent storms.
“It definitely showed,” she said. “I’m not worried, though. We have a lot of girls out, and we’re still trying to figure out where everybody fits best.”

AVOCA – Blake Holst hit a two-run, walk-off single to win it for the Vikings.
Holst finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs, and Joey Cunningham was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a double.
“I am so proud of the way we played mentally tough through adversity,” AHSTW coach Jason Holst said.
