HARLAN – Harlan’s Julia Schechinger hit a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning, and the Cyclones made that stand up for a 2-1 win over Class 3-A No. 6 Treynor on Friday in a nonconference high school softball showdown of league champions.

All the game’s scoring was done in the first inning, with Treynor’s Stella Umphreys hitting an RBI single to stake her team to an early lead.

After the first, pitchers Morgan Schaben of Harlan and Sydni Huisman of Treynor settled in and pitched shutout ball. Schaben finished with 11 strikeouts and four hits allowed; Huisman struck out eight and allowed three hits. The two will be teammates at Central College next season.

“We knew going in it would be a battle,” Treynor coach Kara Huisman said. “We knew Harlan is well-coached, and we wanted to see that quality of opponent going into the postseason.”

Harlan, the Hawkeye Ten Conference champion, winds up its regular season with a Monday doubleheader at Denison-Schleswig. Treynor, meanwhile, finished its regular season and is off until opening regionals Wednesday at home against OA-BCIG.
