Drake Nettles and Easton Dermody combined on a four-hitter on Monday as Lewis Central knocked off Class 3-A No. 5 Harlan 3-1 in Hawkeye Ten Conference high school baseball.
Nettles pitched six innings before Dermody struck out the side in the seventh inning for the save.
“It’s a big win for us,” L.C. coach Lee Toole said. “It’ll get these guys in the right mindset for the rest of the week.”
The Titans play every night this week, starting with a Tuesday night home game against Denison-Schleswig.
L.C. scored two runs in the first inning on back-to-back singles by Dermody and Colbey Roth. They advanced on a passed ball. Dermody scored on Jordan Wardlow’s sacrifice fly, and Jake Powell’s single scored Roth.
They added a run in the second when Jonah Pomrenke was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on an Alex Watson single and scored on a wild pitch.
Harlan loaded the bases with none out in the fifth, but Nettles got out of it unscathed on a popout, a strikeout and a groundout.
