There wasn’t a lot of team drama Tuesday at the Council Bluffs Duals at Abraham Lincoln Fieldhouse.

Lewis Central, winners of three straight city dual wrestling championships, tallied a 51-24 win over Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson in the finale to make it four city titles in a row.

The Titans began the night whitewashing St. Albert, which had just seven wrestlers, 78-0, then beat Abraham Lincoln 54-25 in the second round.

Thomas Jefferson opened by knocking off A.L. 50-27 and then earned a 72-3 rout of the Falcons.

Abraham Lincoln took home third place with a 66-6 final round win over St. Albert.

The Titans won the first seven matches against T.J. in building a 45-0 lead, but T.J’s Jacob Byers was able to halt the Lewis Central streak when he pinned Hunter Waldstein.

Jefferson won the last four contested matches to tighten the final score.

Lewis Central coach Doug Kjeldgaard said the difference early was pulling out some matches where his wrestlers trailed.

“We had a handful of guys that really were behind going toward the end of the match, and we were able to just keep wrestling and be competitive.

“It’s something we’ve really been working on across the board with our guys, being competitive at everything they do and having a competitive attitude even when you’re behind and just fight for every point and don’t give up until the end,” Kjeldgaard said.

T.J. coach August Manz was disappointed that his team wasn’t able to close the door in what may have been coin-flip matches.

“We put ourselves in a position with an opportunity to win the city duals going into that last dual. We missed key matches we needed to have a chance to win,” he said.

“We made some mistakes, and they capitalized on our mistakes and outwrestled us in those matches,” Manz added.

Kjeldgaard said his team finished the night just where it wants to be at this time of year.

“We’re kind of in the run-up to the end of the season here. We’ve got a pretty good trajectory here where we’re still building toward peaking at the end of the season,” he said.

“We just want to keep that steady pace going, and I think tonight showed that we’re still on that upward trajectory. About three weeks from now, we want to be at our peak. What we take away from this is that we’re on track,” Kjeldgaard said.
